In the spring of 2025, I taught a class at Boston University Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation called Jump Into Mural-Making. Over the course of a semester, myself, two co-instructors, and about a dozen adult students living with mental illness, co-created a mural in the main classroom of the Center. The class followed both a psychiatric rehabilitation model, in which skills and supports are identified and strengthened over the course of the class, and a community-engaged public art model, in which decisions around the artwork were made collectively and presented to stakeholders by participant-students. The 6’ x 13’ mural was completed on removable wallpaper with acrylic paint. Photos of the mural are not available to protect the confidentiality of those involved.
